Waterloo

Waterloo

Overview

Introduction

The Wellington Museum (once the inn where the Duke of Wellington stayed after his victory) is the best starting point for a visit to Waterloo (10 mi/16 km south of Brussels). The actual battle site is a short distance from town and dominated by a 130-ft-/40-m-high monument topped with a 28-ton lion. At the top, there is a fine view and a visitors center. See Napoleon's last headquarters, the Waxwork Museum and the 360-ft-/110-m-long panoramic painting of the battle. The pretty town of nearby Mons (34 mi/ 55 km southwest of Waterloo) played an important role in World Wars I and II. It features a museum and several memorials.
