Lake Myvatn

Lake Myvatn

Overview

Introduction

After five minutes of swatting away the numerous midges (gnats) buzzing around your face, you'll understand how Iceland's Lake Myvatn (or "Midge") got its name. Located 175 mi/280 km northeast of Reykjavik, excellent fishing and relaxation are the main draws of this impressive lake, which is surrounded by a lunarlike landscape area with a wide variety of other recreational activities available—just be sure to keep some insect repellent on hand.

While in the area, visit Jokulsa Canyon National Park, the Namaskard boiling sulfur pits, volcanic formations at Asbyrgi Canyon, Dimmuborgir and Dettifoss (one of Europe's tallest and most amazing waterfalls).
