Norak

Overview

Introduction

There are two reasons travelers go to this completely modern town (built in 1960). One is to see the nearby Norak Dam and its hydroelectric station. More than 975 ft/300 m high, the dam is billed as the tallest concrete barrier in the world, and the attached station boasts the largest electricity-generating capacity as well. The second draw to Norak is the sparking clear blue lake which sits atop the dam. In the summer, the water can get quite warm, and boats can be rented for a tour of the lake's fjordlike geography. If either of these excites you, plan on a full-day trip from Dushanbe. The drive from the capital, through fields and forests, is really quite pleasant. 50 mi/75 km southeast of Dushanbe.
