Leavenworth

Overview

Introduction

Leavenworth, Kansas, a town 29 mi/47 km northwest of Kansas City, may be most famous for Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary. But it also has the historic 7,000-acre/2,835-hectare Fort Leavenworth military post, established in 1827 and the oldest continuously active fort west of the Appalachian Mountains.

Visitors should also see the Frontier Army Museum and the Buffalo Soldier Monument, dedicated in 1992 to pay tribute to the African American cavalry units that the Native Americans nicknamed "buffalo soldiers."
