Khovd

Khovd

Overview

Introduction

This tree-lined town in western Mongolia along the Buyant Gol River is an excellent jumping-off point for a number of excursions. From there, you can get to spectacular Tavanbogd, Mongolia's highest peak (on the borders with Russia and China), in the rugged Altai Mountains; the Blue Goat Nature Reserve; the Blue Caves; and Har Us Nuur (Black Water Lake), a breeding ground for rare birds and other wildlife. Khovd itself has a good museum and a lively market on Sundays. The people in the area are fascinating as well: The Kazakhs hunt with eagles, and the Tuvan people are known for their throat singing. 1,250 mi/2000 km west of Ulaanbaatar.
