Cripple Creek, Colorado, is on the southern slopes of Pikes Peak in Teller County, 25 mi/40 km southwest of Colorado Springs. What was once a prosperous gold-mining town has turned into a modern-day casino and is one of three cities in the state approved for limited-stakes gambling. Also, in usual casino-town fashion, there's a bevy of bars, restaurants and entertainment.
History buffs can see several old mines on the Cripple Creek and Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad or pay a visit to the Old Homestead Museum, housed in a restored brothel that still has its original furnishings.
From Cripple Creek, head south on Route 67 to Canon City. Be aware that this section of 67 is a road best taken by drivers with experience on mountain byways. If you're new to the Rockies, you may want to take an alternate route.
Take Highway 50 West of Canon City to reach Royal Gorge, a rugged canyon cut by the Arkansas River. The world's highest suspension bridge (1,053 ft/321 m) spans the gorge as does a tram ride that runs from rim to rim. Adventurers can experience the Arkansas close-up by going white-water rafting.
