It may come as no surprise that the name of this city is synonymous with "cliff." Falaise is a fortified city overlooking the Ante River.
Falaise is surrounded by a fortifying wall—or was. Of the original 1-mi/2-km wall, three-quarters remain. One of the most notable parts is the distinctive Porte des Cordeliers, which are worth visiting.
Notable sites in Falaise include the birthplace of the Norman William the Conqueror, who would go on to become the first Norman King of England. Falaise is also home to several churches, including the 11th-century Eglise Saint-Gervais. The Andre Lemaitre Museum is also worth a visit, with 90 works from the painter, who was born in Falaise.
