Overview

Introduction

In addition to an office with a printing press for his newspaper, Indian Opinion, Mohandas Gandhi's settlement in Inanda included a clinic, school and homes, including his own family's cottage, Sarvodaya, which means "well-being for all." Today visitors are welcome to look around, and there's a small museum documenting his time in South Africa in Sarvodaya and a bronze bust of him outside (Monday-Friday 8 am-4 pm, Saturday 9 am-2 pm, free but donations appreciated). Nearby the settlement are the former house and grave of John Dube, the founder and first president of the African National Congress in 1912. The school next to the house served as a polling station during South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994, and it was where former South African President Nelson Mandela cast his vote. To get to Inanda, travel north from Durban on the N2. Take the R102 exit and follow Kwamashu Highway (M25) to Inanda and turn left. The settlement is clearly signposted.
