At 60,000 acres/24,281 hectares, this park is one of the few remaining large wilderness areas in the Midwest. The state's Department of Natural Resources maintains more than 90 mi/145 km of foot trails, 16 rustic trailside cabins and many campsites in the park, which is located along the northwest coast of the Upper Peninsula, overlooking Lake Superior.
Located 562 mi/901 km northwest of Detroit, the park is almost as far north as Isle Royale National Park, but it's a lot easier to reach. Still, the trails of "the Porkies" are no cakewalk. The terrain can be rugged: Expect steep grades and stream crossings. Many trails are dotted with small waterfalls. Black bears are common in the area, and campers need to take precautions with their food to avoid a run-in with the animals.
