A truly impressive Gothic town just 160 mi/260 km northeast of Bratislava, Levoca, Slovakia, played an important role in the Middle Ages as a crossroads for traders from Hungary, Poland and other European kingdoms. The money generated from that traffic built impressive city gates, ramparts, houses and the Town Hall (early 17th century). Don't miss the Roman Catholic Sv. Jakub Church, which contains a 60-ft/18-m wooden altarpiece and numerous works of religious art.
Just east of town are the ruins of Spissky Hrad, once the largest castle in the country. Levoca and its environs are generally seen as a day trip from Kosice, about 40 mi/60 km away.
