Overview

Introduction

The site of World War II battles, the Kokoda Trail is the name given to what was once a long wartime supply line, beginning near Port Moresby, continuing across the Owen Stanley Ridge to Buna on the northern New Guinea coast, and passing several Kaoiri native villages. Treks through the jungle and along mountainous ridges will take you past beautiful flora and decaying remnants of the war. These treks generally take from one to two weeks. Anyone going should hire a guide and be prepared to really rough it—you must be in excellent physical shape (often the trail is just short of vertical). The best route starts at Kokoda and goes (downhill) toward Port Moresby. 50 mi/80 km northeast of Port Moresby.
