Tien Shan Mountains

Tien Shan Mountains

Overview

Introduction

This range, which stretches into Kazakhstan and China, has some of the highest, most beautiful and least-explored mountains in the world. The central region is accessible from the mining town of Inylchek, 100 mi/160 km southeast of Karakol. Because the mountains are so far off the beaten track, they should only be explored by experienced trekkers with guides or on an organized hike. Sights include glaciers, lakes, spectacular scenery, Mount Tengri and Pobeda Peak. The legendary Torgurat Pass connects the country with China, and the trip makes an incredible journey through some of the region's most awe-inspiring mountain roads. Note that you will need a separate Chinese visa for the border crossing.
