Although not particularly easy to get to, the Middle Egypt town of Minya on the western bank of the Nile, 150 mi/240 km south of Cairo, is an ideal place to stay while exploring several archaeological sites, including Hermopolis, Tuna el-Gebal, Tell el-Amarna and Beni Hasan. The area is considerably more conservative than other parts of Egypt; travelers are advised to dress accordingly and respect local customs. Security is very high in Minya, so expect delays and organized escorts.
