Minya

Minya

Overview

Introduction

Although not particularly easy to get to, the Middle Egypt town of Minya on the western bank of the Nile, 150 mi/240 km south of Cairo, is an ideal place to stay while exploring several archaeological sites, including Hermopolis, Tuna el-Gebal, Tell el-Amarna and Beni Hasan. The Office of Antiquities Service in the Municipal Building in Minya has information about how to get to the sites.

The area is considerably more conservative than other parts of Egypt; travelers are advised to dress accordingly and respect local customs. Security is very high in Minya, so expect delays and organized escorts.
