Wonsan

Wonsan

Overview

Introduction

This port city (pop. 350,000) north of the Geumgang Mountains is probably the least interesting place on most North Korea itineraries. It's primarily industrial and commercial, so time is better spent elsewhere. However, there are a few places around Wonsan that may be worth your time, such as a co-op persimmon farm often open to visitors, Asia's cleanest beach and the soothing sludge baths at the Lake Sijung motel/sanatorium. Also worth a stop for some relaxing natural scenery is a waterfall area the Korean People's Army discovered while blasting its way through the mountains in 2001. 90 mi/145 km east of Pyongyang.
