Perched on the peninsula that juts into the Aegean Sea beyond Marmaris, Datca, Turkey, is probably the way Marmaris was in the days before it sold out to mass tourism.
It's a sleepy place 175 mi/281 km south of Izmir where you go to eat seafood, shop in fairly upscale carpet and jewelry shops, and take boat excursions to see the ruins of the Greek city of Knidos.
You can also take a ferry to the Greek islands of Rhodes and Symi. The most pleasant accommodations are 3 mi/5 km from the center in Eski Datca (Old Datca).
In 2012, a series of forest fires ravaged the area, destroying acres/hectares of pine forest.
