Chitral

Chitral

Overview

Introduction

In the heart of the Hindu Kush Mountains, this town is accessible by road only during the summer. (Flights are available year-round but are subject to cancellation because of inclement weather.) However, travel to Chitral is inadvisable at this time. Its greatest attractions, in better times, are the Kalash people and the spectacular scenery (mountains reach 25,425 ft/7,750 m). The town also has an interesting fort, a bazaar and a mosque. Hot springs, terraced farmland and Kalash villages are also of interest. (It's said that the Kalasha are descendants of Greek soldiers from the army of Alexander the Great.) 175 mi/280 km northwest of Islamabad.
