Minsk

Minsk

Overview

Introduction

Although it's the capital and largest city in Belarus (population 1,975,000), Minsk can be seen in one day. As is the case with so many cities in the region, Minsk was leveled during World War II.

The many lovely parks and open areas resulted from postwar planning and reconstruction (the only drawback is the cookie-cutter Soviet architecture—one identical apartment block follows another). Stroll through the heart of the city, visit the remaining Old Town just by the main street and stop in some of the shops. Plan to spend time in the Museum of the Great Patriotic War and at the art museum, which displays Belarusian crafts and art. In the evening, a good symphony and a ballet company provide entertainment.

Nightlife is fast growing; the well placed, bar-lined Zybickaja street is perfect to enjoy local beer, drinks and Russian music.

Day trips can be made to Khatyn.
