Mcmurdo Station

Mcmurdo Station

Overview

Introduction

Located on Ross Island, McMurdo is the largest settlement in Antarctica. It's home to about 1,200 residents during the summer season. The station is operated by the U.S., but it's reached by air from New Zealand. (New Zealand's Scott Base is a near neighbor.) Residents put on the McMurdo Golf Tournament each year, perhaps the only golf match in which there is no difference between the fairway and the rough—it's all rough. They also hold a marathon and an annual rugby match against their neighbors at Scott Base. The station has a two-lane bowling alley, a chapel and several monuments to Antarctic explorers. A hut built by Robert Scott's expedition in 1902 is also there but is only unlocked for careful tourists.
