Morne Diablotin National Park

Morne Diablotin National Park

Overview

Introduction

Located 6 mi/10 km southeast of Portsmouth, Morne Diablotin National Park, Dominica's largest national park, encompasses a vast expanse of 8,000 acres/3,200 hectares of rain forest.

It's located in the mountainous northern interior of the island and is named for Morne Diablotin, Dominica's highest peak (4,747 ft/1,447 m), which is inside the park. A special parrot reserve in the park was created to help protect the country's two most famous species of indigenous and endangered birds: the purple-breasted sisserou parrot and the red-necked jaco parrot. Estimates indicate that fewer than 1,000 of each species remain.

The park offers great hiking opportunities. There's a challenging trail to the peak of Morne Diablotin that begins in Syndicate and takes about three hours each way. Less adventurous hikers may want to stick to the loop trail in the parrot reserve, collectively known as the Syndicate Nature Trail.
