Rathlin Island

Rathlin Island

Overview

Introduction

Located 50 mi/75 km north of Belfast, Rathlin Island, Northern Ireland, has a number of caves and is often visited by spelunkers.

The most famous of the caves in Rathlin Island is Bruce's Cave. When Scotland's Robert the Bruce hid on the island, he is said to have been inspired by a cave spider weaving its web. The arachnid's persistence persuaded him to go back and fight the English.

Access to the island depends upon the weather: On calm days April-September, boats leave daily from Ballycastle; the rest of the year a mail boat runs three times a week. http://www.rathlinballycastleferry.com.
