Tawharanui Open Sanctuary

Tawharanui Open Sanctuary

Overview

Introduction

Located 56 mi/90 km north of Auckland, this open sanctuary incorporates recreation, farming and conservation activities in one area. A predator-proof fence runs across the peninsula to keep rats and other rodents out and to allow kiwi and other endangered native species to live in peace.

Several walking tracks cross the sanctuary and there is also a campsite for those wanting to rough it for a night or two. The park's most stunning feature is the white-sand beach of Anchor Bay. It is safely sheltered, and it provides excellent swimming for the whole family. The beach and its car park can be crowded over the Christmas and New Year holiday period, but outside these times you may find yourself almost alone.

There is no public transport to the sanctuary, so driving is the only option. http://www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz or http://www.tossi.org.nz.
