The West Coast of South Africa is perhaps most famous for its wildflowers that carpet the region in vivid color from mid-August through September. White sandy beaches there stretch as far as the eye can see, often strewn with kelp and driftwood, interrupted only by small fishing villages such as Paternoster and Lambert's Bay.
Visiting the West Coast National Park during these two months is thoroughly rewarding as the veld is a colorful tapestry of flowers and birds, as well as small herds of antelope and Cape mountain zebra. Langebaan Lagoon is renowned for its birdlife and is usually teeming with flamingos and migrant waders.
In the small village of Darling, about 46 mi/75 km from Cape Town, you will find Evita se Perron, home to Evita Bezuidenhout (Tannie Evita) and her creator, renowned political satirist and playwright, Pieter-Dirk Uys. It is a satirical, somewhat bizarre cabaret venue that includes a museum of apartheid artifacts and a garden called Boerassic Park, landscaped with fake flowers and tongue-in-cheek sculptures inspired by South African politics.
