Unlike the other towns of Cinque Terre, the village of Corniglia overlooks the sea from the top of a 330-ft-/100-m-high promontory. A steep staircase and street lead up to the village. A bus service from the train station to the village is also available for 2.50 euros (the ticket is included in the purchase of a Cinque Terre card).
The origins of Corniglia date back to the Roman age. The village has kept its shape since then, with tiny alleys, called caruggi, that lead to a terrace with panoramic views of the sea. The houses are shorter than those of the other Cinque Terre towns and are more similar to the buildings of Liguria's hinterland.
Corniglia has approximately 200 residents and is divided into several tiny districts called canti, with peculiar names such Foraggiu, Caruggiu, er Fossu, a Madunetta, e Ca Brusa and a Ciapaa.
Corniglia gelato al miele, made from local honey, is among the most celebrated Cinque Terre delicacies and is definitely a must-try.
