Cape Winelands

Cape Winelands

Overview

Introduction

The mountainous interior immediately inland of Cape Town, South Africa, boasts some of the country's most compelling scenery, but is best known as the home of South African viniculture. Set in the heart of the Winelands, Stellenbosch, the country's second-oldest town, is studded with wonderful examples of Cape Dutch architecture and is also the site of the country's premier Afrikaans university.

Nearby Franschhoek (French Corner) has a spectacular setting in a lush green valley and is famed for its concentration of world-class restaurants. The area around these two iconic towns supports hundreds of wine estates, most of which have tasting rooms. Rather than drive yourself around, join an organized wine tour, so you can enjoy sampling a few different estates without having to worry about the strictly implemented drunk-driving laws.
