Mondulkiri Province

Mondulkiri Province

Overview

Introduction

The rolling hills and mountains, and the pleasant year-round breeze in Mondulkiri Province make the area unique within Cambodia. Few people visit there, but those who do enjoy wonderful scenery, treks into hill-tribe villages and cascading waterfalls. The area is at an elevation of around 2,625 ft/800 m and enjoys a cool season November-February.

Sparsely populated and forested, the area is increasingly attracting adventure and ecotourism. Easily accessible from Phnom Penh, 221 mi/357 km to the west, the province makes for a good break from the city and a chance to explore rural Cambodia. Mondulkiri's provincial capital is the town of Sen Monorom. Although it is only a small town, it makes an excellent base for exploring the area and has a good but basic range of accommodations available.

There are no commercial flights between Phnom Penh and Sen Monorom. The best way to get to Mondulkiri Province is by taxi from Sorya bus station in Phnom Penh. It's faster than the bus itself, which takes seven hours on a long and potholed red-dirt road.
