Avatime Hills

Avatime Hills

Overview

Introduction

Where most of Ghana tends to be rather flat, the area to the east of Lake Volta, approximately 90 mi/150 km northeast of Accra, is somewhat more mountainous and significantly cooler than the coast. A popular center for hiking in this region is the small hilltop town of Amedzofe, which lies within easy walking distance of several waterfalls. Also nearby is Mount Gemi, site of a tall cross erected in the 1930s by German missionaries. Nearby attractions include the villages of Tafi Atome and Tafi Abuipe, the former the site of an ecotourism project centered on a few troops of sacred mona monkeys, and the latter is home to one of the region's best-known kente-cloth weaving communities.
