The lowest point in the Caribbean at 144 ft/44 m below sea level, the super-saline Lago Enriquillo is the remains of a sea passage that millions of years ago split the isle of Hispaniola in half.
It's an anomaly in many regards. Not least, it is home to the largest population of American crocodiles in the world. Flamingos can also be seen during boat trips to Isla Cabritos, where endangered endemic species of iguanas are found; the park's visitor center is located there.
