Qalaat Saladin

Qalaat Saladin

Overview

Introduction

Although architecturally less impressive than Krac des Chevaliers, the Crusades-era castle of Qalaat Saladin certainly won't disappoint visitors who travel to its remote mountain location 125 mi/200 km southwest of Aleppo. Indeed, its setting is one of its most impressive features.

As you enter the grounds, you'll see what looks like a thin, tall rock formation. Actually, the gaps were intentionally carved away to prevent access to the fortress. Within the fortress, you can still walk around the ramparts and climb several towers, as well as see several Byzantine chapels, a mosque, stables and cisterns. The castle is best seen as a day trip from Latakia or Homs.
