The Ottauquechee River runs through the once-thriving mill town of Quechee, which is 4 mi/6.5 km east of Woodstock and known primarily for its greatest natural attraction, Quechee Gorge in Quechee State Park. Carved by a glacier, the gorge is 165 ft/50 m deep and 1 mi/1.5 km long and is affectionately referred to as "The Grand Canyon of the East." That may be pushing the site's grandeur a little, but the gorge is without doubt an impressive sight. There are ample picnic areas and trails for hiking and exploring.
On the banks of the river in an old mill building, you will find a shopping complex that includes the well-known Simon Pearce glass workshop and store. You can watch glassblowing demonstrations daily and purchase the wares in the shop. The company also runs a restaurant there.
The small town really comes alive in late June during the annual Balloon Festival, held right on the village square. In addition to hot-air balloon rides over the gorge and beyond, visitors will find a craft show, lots of food, children's entertainment and live music performances. Also near the gorge is the Quechee Polo Club, where matches are held on Saturday June-August.
