Khorog

Khorog

Overview

Introduction

Set in the foothills of the Pamirs, this quiet, remote town is generally used as a jumping-off point for climbing and trekking trips to nearby mountains. The town lies on the border with Afghanistan and is currently accessible only from Dushanbe via a less-than-reliable TajikAir flight and a single rocky, mountain-pass road. To enter Khorog and the Pamir region, you must apply for a special permit as officially it is a semiautonomous region and has its own governance. A new bridge was recently constructed between Khorog and Afghanistan in hopes of increasing trade, and a soon-to-be-completed international English-language university will open up the area to many more visitors. 327 mi/527 km east of Dushanbe.
