Bonito

Bonito

Overview

Introduction

Bonito (which means "beautiful") is one of Brazil's major ecotourism meccas. The small town in the southwest of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, 995 mi/1,600 km west of Rio de Janeiro, is surrounded by a spectacular array of natural attractions. These range from grottoes like the blueish Gruta de Lago Azul, filled with stalactites, stalagmites and underground lakes, to refreshing waterfalls and rivers like the Rio Formoso, with waters so clear that swimmers can open their eyes to gaze at colorful fish and feel as if they're in a giant, open-air aquarium. The surrounding vegetation is lush and beautiful. In order to preserve the region, attractions can be visited only with guides.
