Rhine Valley

Rhine Valley

Overview

Introduction

Probably the most scenic stretch of Germany's Rhine River Valley is between St. Goar and Rudesheim. You can travel it by cruise boat or train—the boat is more enjoyable. You'll see plenty of castles and steep vineyards as well as the legendary Lorelei, a dangerous cliff from which a beautiful siren reportedly enticed sailors.

For a leisurely tour of the middle Rhine, you can board a cruise boat in Koblenz. Shorter tours begin at many towns farther south along the river. To get up close and personal with a Rhine castle, try taking a flashlight to explore the enchanting ruins of Rheinfels Castle overlooking St. Goar.
