Hell's Gate

Hell's Gate

Overview

Introduction

Evidently, Saba's settlers were a hardy crowd. They had to be to make it over the harsh terrain to Hell's Gate, a village in the northern part of the island. Perhaps in thanks for surviving such rigors, islanders built the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, which overlooks the sea and six neighboring islands. The church is a little smaller and not as old as the churches in Windwardside (but they don't have this view). One of the attractions at Hell's Gate is the availability of the fine needlework craft known as Saba Lace. You can buy it at the Catholic Church, which has the largest collection on the island.
