Ambae Island

Overview

Introduction

Ambae has been known by many names. It's one of the islands claiming to be the inspiration for James Michener's "Bali Ha'i." The island, which gets very heavy rainfall, has a large volcano with three lakes in its extinct crater. The adventurous can take an all-day hike up the volcano and swim in the warm-water lakes. We recommend hiring a guide to avoid breaking local taboos and getting lost in the fog. 30 mi/45 km east of Espiritu Santo.
