Bago

Bago

Overview

Introduction

Bago, Myanmar, a city of 135,000, makes an excellent day trip from Yangon, just 50 mi/80 km away. Visit the Shwemawdaw Pagoda and the impressive Shwethalyaung Buddha—at 180 ft/55 m, it's one of the country's largest reclining Buddhas. The city streets are a good place for people-watching.

A day trip can be made to Kyaikto to see the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, known locally as the Golden Rock, a small shrine perched atop a precariously balanced rock—an important place for Buddhists. Although there's no charge to see Bago itself, visitors are required to purchase a combo ticket (available at the Shwemawdaw Pagoda or Schwethalyaung Buddha) for some sights.
