Overview

Introduction

The Grand Portage was an 8-mi/14-km trail used by fur traders to transport goods between Lake Superior and the Pigeon River, a vital link between the Great Lakes and points to the northwest. As such, it was the earliest European settlement in northern Minnesota. Today, you can visit a reconstructed fur depot that was once headquarters of the powerful North West Co. In the warehouse, you can see replicas of the huge canoes used to transport furs and goods. If you have time, follow the portage trail to Fort Charlotte. The site is open mid-May to mid-October. You also can catch a ferry in Grand Portage to Michigan's Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior. The monument is located within the Grand Portage Indian Reservation in Cook County. 150 mi/241 km northeast of Duluth.
