One of the most popular recreation areas in the region, Lake Cumberland is a lovely area that offers good fishing and a wide variety of water-based activities. Although it's a man-made lake, the countryside is so rugged and green that it reminded us of a Scottish loch.
Those who want to get out on the water can rent houseboats from local marinas. The upscale Jamestown Resort and Marina (near Jamestown) is a 300-acre/121-hectare, full-service recreation complex with a floating marina, a full complement of rental boats, an all-suite lodge, rustic cabins, a cafe and various recreational facilities.
The Indian Hills Resort near Russell Springs is not as elaborate (or expensive), but it has much more of the character of a traditional fishing camp. Rental boats are available, as are cabins and campsites, and the Gator II Grill has excellent down-home cooking—some of the best pork chops we've ever had (sorry, Mom). Approximately 90 mi/145 km south of Lexington.
