Kanton Island

Overview

Introduction

Largest and most northerly of the Phoenix Islands, Kanton atoll has a large airstrip built by the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II—but no scheduled flights. Sights on the island include an abandoned NASA satellite tracking station and a bird refuge (home to red-footed boobies and white fairy terns). 1,100 mi/1,800 km east of Tarawa.
