Introduction

A wild and barren peninsula of ochre mountains, Musandam has some of the most remarkable scenery in the Arabian Peninsula. Cut off from the main body of Oman by the poorer coastal emirates of the United Arab Emerites, it's quite a drive from Muscat but well worth a three-day trip (particularly with an off-road vehicle and camping gear). We recommend taking a dhow trip along the coast to see the spectacular fjords. The peninsula is also popular with rock climbers and divers, who go to explore offshore coral reefs and shipwrecks. From Khasab on the northern tip of the peninsula, visitors can watch the spectacle of hundreds of speedboats setting out each evening to smuggle duty-free cigarettes to the Iranian port of Minab. 250 mi/400 km northwest of Masqat.
