Lake Abbe

Lake Abbe

Overview

Introduction

This lake makes an interesting excursion from the capital. You should, however, expect to encounter some inconveniences along the way—a few parts of the drive are quite rough. Still, it's worth the effort to see the lunar landscape that surrounds the lake, plus the area's rich birdlife, which includes pelicans, pink flamingos and ostriches. Note the forests near Kouta Bouya, the swamps by the lake and some of the historical sites near Asbalto and Modaito. The forests aren't really that special, unless you consider the surrounding terrain—stop only if time permits. If you have to choose between Asbalto and Modaito, visit Modaito—the scenery along the drive is better. Although you can visit the lake on an exhausting, superlong day trip from Djibouti City, we wouldn't recommend it. It's best to overnight in Dikhil or the small camp at the lake (reservations required). All tour companies in the capital can arrange visits. Getting there without a guide would be nearly impossible. 105 mi/165 km southeast of Djibouti City.
