Lake Khovsgol

Overview

Introduction

This high mountain lake (5,400 ft/1,645 m above sea level) is surrounded by mountains, meadows and forest. You can hike along the shore, take a dip in the icy waters or go fishing. The Darkhat Valley to the west of the lake is a beautiful area with lakes, rivers and possibilities for bird-watching, fishing and horse trekking. It is possible to visit the "reindeer people," a group of nomadic herders in the area, but this should be done only with an experienced guide. 125 mi/200 km northwest of Ulaanbaatar.
