Santa Isabel

Santa Isabel

Overview

Introduction

A relatively long, narrow island (120 mi/195 km long and 10 mi/15 km wide), Santa Isabel is reached by flying into Buala on the east coast. It's quite beautiful—we stayed one night and wished we had more time. Kia, a village in the northwest, is built on stilts over the lagoon. Tourists are virtually unheard of in Santa Isabel, and islanders tend to be suspicious of them. Several smaller islands surround Santa Isabel (fine scuba diving), but they can only be reached by chartered boat. 50 mi/80 km north of Guadalcanal.
