St Georges (Oyapock)

St Georges (Oyapock)

Overview

Introduction

This town sits on the banks of the Oyapock River, which separates Brazil from French Guiana. It offers the unique opportunity to take canoes and boats up the river to see Amerindian villages and the Saut Maripa waterfalls. One of the very last outposts of the fabled French Foreign Legion is stationed there. They parade in full dress uniform on Bastille Day. We thoroughly enjoyed our two-day trip. Accommodations are on the basic side. St. Georges, 85 mi/140 km southeast of Cayenne, is most commonly reached by air.
