The huge Cariboo Chilcotin area of central British Columbia, located 340 mi/550 km north of Vancouver, is lake country—it has more than 8,000 lakes and countless streams filled with trout and salmon. The trout fishing is particularly good at Young, Loon, Eagan, Bonaparte and Sharpe Lakes. Wilderness outfitters use helicopters or seaplanes to fly anglers to the more remote waters in the western part of the region.
The area is great for white-water canoeing and rafting—Bowron Lake Provincial Park is highly recommended. There's a nice waterfall near Canim Lake. If you're lucky, you might see the Chilcotin wild horses roaming the grasslands.
Cariboo Chilcotin is named after the Old Cariboo Trail, which was followed during the Cariboo gold rush. The trail started in Lillooet, where today you'll find a Pioneer Museum and other heritage structures. In Horsefly, the Jack Lynn Memorial Museum is named after the prospector who discovered gold in the region in 1859.
