Tassili N'Ajjer National Park

Tassili N'Ajjer National Park

Overview

Introduction

Some consider Tassili, with its breathtaking scenery, to be one of the wonders of the world. Seldom seen by visitors, this phenomenal area adjacent to the Libyan border is actually a huge sandstone plateau with deep canyons and gorges, petrified forests, and prehistoric cave art and rock paintings/engravings. Tassili has several towns and oases worth visiting: Djanet, Tamrit, Sefar, Tin Tazarift and Tin-Zoumaitok. We recommend seeing them via camel or four-wheel-drive vehicle on a prearranged escorted tour. We do not recommend visiting the region independently because of banditry, natural dangers, the chance of getting lost and the lack of accommodations (or even oases) en route. 1,100 mi/1,770 km southeast of Algiers.
