'Eua

'Eua

Overview

Introduction

The rugged island of 'Eua gives a taste of rural living. It offers small, very basic guesthouses, hiking, outrigger canoes, beaches and beautiful scenery. Reached by a 10-minute flight or three-hour boat ride, the island has no public transport, so visitors and residents walk everywhere. The people make up in hospitality for what the facilities lack in the way of comforts. Unlike the largest island, Tongatapu, 'Eua is hilly—nearly mountainous. It's possible to make invigorating hikes into the forestry reserve east of the airstrip or south to the sea cliffs at Lakufa'anga. A huge natural stone bridge called Li'angahuo'a Maui is a bit north of the cliffs. 25 mi/40 km southeast of Tongatapu.
