Introduction

The journey itself is the goal when visiting Concepcion. This town, located on the Paraguay River, is reached by a fascinating riverboat trip from the capital. Remember to watch for animals and birds along the shore: Without a doubt, you'll see innumerable varieties. (Allow at least a week for the round trip by boat, which can be arranged on cargo or passenger vessels at the Asuncion port.) Inexpensive two-seater crop-duster plane flights are available, but safety is questionable. Overland travel to Concepcion is possible, although much of the road from Asuncion (194 mi/312 km) is unpaved. Buses run several times daily, but service stops after a heavy rain. Another possibility is the rough but scenic trip through the Chaco. This is a great route for birding and seeing wildlife, but you'll need a four-wheel-drive vehicle. 130 mi/210 km north of Asuncion.
