Linden

Linden

Overview

Introduction

The way to Guyana's second-largest city of Linden includes a trip up the East Bank main road past small villages—Eccles, Republic Park, Grove (a large sugar estate), Friendship, Supply, Pearl—and then on to the Soesdyke/Linden Highway (arguably the best road in Guyana), which then will carry you past Yaracabra and Kuru Kuru.

There's not much to see these days in Linden, a mining town south of Georgetown—the bauxite industry is nearly defunct. However, we do recommend a stop along the Linden highway to see the towering white sandhills and black-water creeks. You can also hire a car from the Linden market to take you to Blue Lake in the old mining areas, where you can spend a relaxing day. Throughout the month of December, Linden hosts the Kashif and Shanghai Football tournament, Guyana's most prestigious soccer match.

There are also a few small resorts along the way, such as Emerald Tower and Splashmin's Fun Park and Resort, which are easy to travel to and well worth a visit. Also, St. Cuthbert's Mission, an Amerindian community, lies about 5 mi/8 km off the Linden highway and makes for an interesting side trip. 70 mi/115 km south of Georgetown.
