Kas/Kalkan

Kas/Kalkan

Overview

Introduction

Once the Greek port of Andifli, Kas (pronounced cash) is now one of Turkey's more bohemian resorts. There aren't a lot of obvious attractions for families or day-trippers in this region 380 mi/610 km south of Istanbul; the rocky coast is for serious swimmers only, and the village itself is tiny.

However, Kas boasts a surprisingly fine collection of design and antiques shops, and the carpet dealers are well-educated—a delightful alternative to crowded bazaars. English is the dominant language, and the restaurants are excellent. In recent years, Kas has become a haven for yacht enthusiasts and adventure sports, in particular wreck-diving.

About 16 mi/26 km up the coast, Kalkan (formerly the Greek village of Kalamaki) is more exclusive. A number of expatriates have settled in the town, and its international cuisine is renowned throughout Turkey. Both towns are well worth a day's diversion and make excellent bases for visiting nearby archaeological sites such as Pantara, Xanthos and Letoon.
