Failaka

Overview

Introduction

Kuwait's Arabian Gulf islands—Bubiyan, Failaka, Kubbar, and Qaruh—cover a total of 400 sq mi/1,035 sq km, and, with the exception of Failaka, that's about the most interesting thing that can be said about them. Failaka, the only inhabited island, is a fascinating place—both as a destination and for the method used to get there. Travelers reach the island by a fabulous ferry system employing dhows. Only day trips are currently possible, but plans exist to build large resorts on Failaka. There are also historical sites of interest—one dates from 5000 BC. Visit the National Museum to see artifacts from local digs. The Iraqis removed the local population from Failaka, and it's now home to a U.S. military base. 20 mi/30 km east of Kuwait City.
